Old Business

Discussion and Approval of Budget for 2009-10

2009-10 Budget

FOWM will be over budget by $7465 without further cuts or increased income.

Last year, the reserved were drawn down by 20,000 due to

Eight kids benefit from private lessons each year. Cost was $10,785. One problem is that some teachers do not provide regular invoices and wait til the end of the year. Also, budget is for half-hour lessons but teachers have been giving and charging for one hour.

Discussion about importance of private lessons instruction. Can we continue to afford to pay for individual lessons or do we switch to using high school students for lesson. Should we have group lessons?

Overall, 1/3 of our budget is for private lessons.
Agree to cut private scholarship instructions to 4 students. We agree to limit lessons to 30 minutes. Lessons costs $30 each half-hour lesson. This brings our scholarship lesson budget to $4800.

Seattle Music Partners are high school students but not up to the task of private lessons. Helpful but does not replace a private professional instructor.

Endangered instruments: How can we utilize this program?

Need a volunteer to figure out how to make sectionals work. Endangered instrument kids don’t need sectional but should be uniform and given to all students.

Tom volunteers to work on SMP.
$2500 is line item for ensemble instruction?
Agreement to reduce sheet music to $4000
Agreement that $6000 should be allocated for festivals and competitions

Approved budget for 2009-10 year. Yeah!

Reports

Beth Fortune has nothing new to report for the upcoming year.
Ms. Barr-Clingan reports teaching this week for the jazz students.

Do we meet monthly? Should executive meeting take place and then email to the board to get things moving?
Agreement to have September meeting take place the third Monday in Sept. and have the remainder of the meetings take place the first Monday of the month.

Grants

Kelly Barr-Clingan got a $1500 grant from ???
Amma is seeking a dept. of neighborhood grant for steel drums.

Rebeccah gave a report on the status of grants. D-Addario is still on the table and we will apply by the 15th and target this grant for other than School district or booster program.

Kelly wants to do some after school programs such as Banda, which is a Mexican band.
Need to figure out how much instruction costs and see if families are willing to pay.
How to get information out? In the beginning of the year packet?

Seattle Music Partners

SMP works in three elementary and WMS. They provide music lessons for students. Relies upon music teachers to identify kids for the program. Last year they gave lessons to ten kids. This year they would like to provide for 20 kids.

Yearly calendar: Will be done by executive board and directors

Asha reports that REVERB invited us to participate in their program as a beneficiary in October. We would get 5% of their receipts. All music festival.

Kelly: Hot Java Cool Jazz?
